You slip under the covers, cosy and ready for a good night’s sleep, book in hand, and a promise to yourself: “I’ll just read one chapter.”
Famous last words, my friends.
Before you know it, the sun is peeking over the horizon, and you’re left wondering if your book is secretly laced with caffeine.
Yes, reading a good book can ruin your sleep pattern faster than a double espresso after dinner. Is there any cure?
The Night Owl’s Dilemma
It all starts innocently enough. You’ve got a new book in your hands, and the world around you ceases to exist.
Time? What’s that?
As you turn the pages, you convince yourself you’ll stop after this chapter.
You make the mistake of peeking ahead, and oh, what’s this? A cliffhanger. You can’t possibly call it a night when the fate of your favourite character hangs in the balance, sometimes quite literally.
Suddenly, “just one more chapter” becomes a mantra that lulls you into a false sense of security. Each chapter ends with a tantalising hook that begs you to read on. You find yourself saying things like, “I’ll stop in a minute” or “This book deserves my undivided attention.”
Hey, I can sleep tomorrow.
The Seductive Power of Prose
It’s not just the plot twists and turns that keep you awake. It’s the sheer magic of storytelling. The way a skilled author weaves words together can be as enchanting as a siren’s song.
Characters come alive. Settings become real. Emotions run high.
You’re not just reading, you’re living the story. Who can sleep when there’s a world to explore?
Besides, there’s something strangely satisfying about sneaking a peek at the clock and realising you’ve lost track of time. It’s like a secret pact you’ve made with your book, promising to stay up late and ignore the responsibilities of tomorrow.
Who cares if you’re groggy at work or school? You’ve got a literary adventure to embark upon.
The Unpredictable Plot Twists of Insomnia
As the night progresses, you find yourself facing a classic reader’s dilemma.
Do you stop reading and get a few hours of sleep, or do you throw caution to the wind and devour the entire book in one go?
Spoiler alert: More often than not, the latter wins.
It isn’t always that simple, though. One day I forced myself to stop reading Congo because I had to sleep, only to chase that bloody gorilla through the mountains in my dreams. I woke up more tired than I started.
The moment when you finally finish the book? It’s a mix of triumph and despair.
Triumph because you’ve conquered the literary mountain. Despair because you’re left in a state of emotional turmoil.
You’re drained, exhilarated, and unable to sleep, all at the same time.
So what do you do?
Naturally, you start another book, hoping this time you’ll have the self-control to read “just one more chapter.”
The Morning After
As the sun rises, you might find yourself in an awkward position. The book is either cradled in your arms or, more alarmingly, has knocked you out cold on the pillow next to you.
Your sleep pattern is officially wrecked. Your eyes are redder than Snow White’s apple.
But guess what? You wouldn’t have it any other way.
So, fellow bookworms, embrace your sleepless nights and tangled sheets. Remember, reading a good book can disrupt your sleep pattern, but it also fills your dreams with adventures and characters you’ll never forget.
After all, who needs sleep when there’s a world of books waiting to be devoured?
What book has done this to you?
Yes! A brick sized book by your fav author ruins a good sleep lol. Been there, done that :)
How To Solve Your Own Murder, it’s such a good book and the central mystery is intriguing
