This was a special interview for me, as Ed is my partner in crime quite literally. Here Ed talks about his latest book, but having read many of his books any will not disappoint.
Tell us a little about yourself?
Most people know me from my work on Medium, usually as the "true crime guy" or as an outspoken advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights.Â
What made you become a writer?
I've written stories since I was a little one. When I was in 2nd grade, I won a writing contest hosted by Disney Adventure magazine. It wasn't until I was older that I started writing professionally. I was laid off from my job and felt lost. My best friend suggested that I try writing for a little while.
Where did the idea for It Happened One Adventure come from?Â
One night I was watching TV and wanted to do a rom-com with queer characters. I started thinking about how old school comedies were heavy on banter and complicated situations, so I decided to bring that kind of vibe into modern sensibilities. And with the rise of romantasy, I thought this was the best time to try my hand at something relatively new.Â
What is It Happened One Adventure about?Â
Clark is called into a lawyer's office after his aunt passes away. He learns that he is set to inherit her entire fortune but he must be married and retrieve a family heirloom from another dimension. To complicate matters, he is going to be chased by an inter-dimensional assassin. Things go from complicated to twisted when he finds himself attracted to a writer that was hired to help him find the heirloom.... And the assassin.Â
Tell us about your main characters are they based on anyone you know?Â
Clark is a smart guy but also dedicated to staying single because he likes his freedom and has abandonment issues leftover from his parents choosing to be adventurers rather than raising him.Â
Walter is a writer and fond of eating. Since his works aren't as popular in his world, he agreed to help Clark find the heirloom for a princely sum from Aunt Jacky. His darkest secret is that his favorite color is green not blue like he tells everyone.Â
Gable is the assassin hunting down Clark. He knows he isn't good at his job but it's what his parents expected of him and he never learned to tell them no.Â
What tips would you give a new writer?Â
Trust that your audience is smart and understands what you mean but also realize that they don't know everything about the world or story that you're telling, so you do have to spoon feed them some of the details.Â
What are your favourite books?Â
This is such a hard question but the ones that have had the biggest impact on me are The Pelican Brief by John Grisham. It taught me the importance of research and how to thread ideas together.Â
Boyfriend Material by Jon Jeffries. It's a gay rom-com in the vein of Sex and The City. This book was the first time that I felt like there could be more to queer media than just the typical bullying or coming out story. It influenced the types of stories that I tell.Â
An assassin named Gable targets a guy named Clark. What are the odds?
