Definitely a dark edge to this story. You can't get any worse than cannibalism.
Naturally, this aspect of the story has tended to be downplayed or outright eliminated when it is adapted for other media such as animation. As well as a weird film in which they suddenly became empowered "witch hunters", for reasons known only to the producers.
